{"id":125,"date":"2011-06-04T20:42:22","date_gmt":"2011-06-05T00:42:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/puffin.jacobtanenbaum.com\/?p=125"},"modified":"2014-10-31T01:43:09","modified_gmt":"2014-10-31T05:43:09","slug":"hello-from-maine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/puffin.jacobtanenbaum.com\/?p=125","title":{"rendered":"Hello From Maine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today I made it to the Project Puffin base in Bremen, Maine. \u00a0I&#8217;ll spend the night here and tomorrow I the boat for the island leaves early in the morning. \u00a0I had to pass through the states of Connecticut,\u00a0Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine. \u00a0After I arrived, we spent part of the afternoon packing food into huge rubber dry-bags. \u00a0The staff had just returned from a shopping trip and all the food now must be transported to the islands in<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-126\" style=\"border: 3px solid black;\" title=\"IMG_9552\" src=\"http:\/\/puffin.jacobtanenbaum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/IMG_9552-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/puffin.jacobtanenbaum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/IMG_9552-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/puffin.jacobtanenbaum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/IMG_9552-1024x682.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>small boats, so the dry-bags are a must. \u00a0Tomorrow I go by ferry to and island near Mantinicus. \u00a0I meet a smaller private boat there that will take me the rest of the way out to the island. \u00a0I had dinner with some of the staff in a bird\u00a0sanctuary\u00a0on an island just across the bay from where I am staying. \u00a0Here is the view.<\/p>\n<p>I asked the some of the scientists about puffins and climate change. \u00a0&#8220;Puffin&#8221; Pete Salmansohn told me that Puffins tend to nest high above the water, so they are a little more protected from rising seas than birds that ne<a href=\"http:\/\/puffin.jacobtanenbaum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/IMG_9503.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-130 alignleft\" style=\"border: 2px solid black;\" title=\"IMG_9503\" src=\"http:\/\/puffin.jacobtanenbaum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/IMG_9503-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/puffin.jacobtanenbaum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/IMG_9503-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/puffin.jacobtanenbaum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/IMG_9503-1024x682.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>st very the water line, like piping plovers or least terns. \u00a0But strong storms together with high tides could effect puffin\u00a0borrows. \u00a0 The greatest threat to the puffin is the changing fish population as the water warms. \u00a0The habitat they live in remains in the same spot, but their food is moving north. \u00a0Atlantic Saury are showing up in greater numbers in the Gulf of Maine, but other fish are moving away. \u00a0Now puffins are eating these newly arrived fish. \u00a0Will puffins adapt to the other changes in the food supply?
